About

Eco Realty is about assisting our clients with both their economic and ecological interests as it relates to home, land and income property ownership. Eco means “home” and is a root of both “economy” and “ecology.” Economy derives from the management of household affairs, especially expenses and the efficient use of resources. Ecology is the study of habitat, the science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their environment.

Traditionally property rights are defined as an economic good, including the right to use and enjoy the property, the right to earn income from the property, the right to transfer (sell) that property and the right to legally enforce those rights.

We subscribe to stewardship for the land, water, air and the protection of the biodiversity that has evolved within the natural world. Responsible real estate uses includes protecting the environment and other people in our neighborhoods. It involves adopting ecological designs in our development. Our society’s long-term health and survivability depend on us embracing regenerative practices in our relationship with the soil, the water, the plants and the animals that share the watershed and its related ecosystems.

Our Real Estate Services include residential and commercial consultation and representation in both sales and leases of real estate within the two counties of Marin and Sonoma. For investment buyers we serve the entire Bay Area. We offer property owners assistance with their short sale, foreclosure and refinancing issues.

Buying or selling a home can be a life-changing experience that requires a trusted professional who can guide their clients through the complex world of real estate negotiations, inspections, financing, contracts, title and escrow. With our 25 years of experience, extensive real estate knowledge and a commitment to provide only the best and most timely information to my clients, I’d like to be your go-to source for real estate questions, insight and advice.

The community and neighborhood in which you live matters enormously to your well-being and is likely to become even more so as we transition out of the oil age. The era where we can simply drive our own cars, everywhere and anytime, is coming to an end. Walkability, biking and public transit will become increasing important. Climate change will affect sea levels and water flows so keeping out of harms way requires additional considerations in choosing where to live.

Bernie Stephan

Born in Germany, near Hamburg, raised in Winnipeg Canada and having moved to Southern California at age 16, I’ve experienced some cultural diversity and have developed skills for adapting to change. With a BA in Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, and an MBA from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, I know how to analyze client requirements and solve transactional problems. I use my study in the “science of patterns” to observed market shifts and adapt strategies for making the most of ever-changing conditions.

For the past 40 years my wife Jeri and I have raised our two kids in the San Francisco North Bay and are now enjoying our grandchildren here. From living and working in Mill Valley, San Rafael, San Geronimo, Novato, Petaluma, Sebastopol, Point Reyes and Inverness, I have an intimate knowledge of the communities here and love helping others find the neighborhoods that best fit their circumstances.

As an Information Technology Professional for 25 years, followed by 3 years as a Licensed Appraiser and then 24 years as a Real Estate Broker, I know business, housing and how to effectively represent clients. I’ve owned and managed three Realty offices and have supervised over 50 agents and closed about 3,000 real estate sales and leases over the years.

I’ve mediated disputes between buyers and sellers, successfully keeping everyone out of court, following standard practices and giving sound advice. My communications and negotiating skills are second to none and I operate with high ethical standards, compassionate caring and clarity about my fiduciary duties. As Buyers and Sellers become more knowledgeable and directly involved in their own home search or selling process, know that I can complement their involvement as opposed to competing with them.
